How Pinto Canyon Pet Food is Made

WHY OVEN-BAKED PET FOOD? Pinto Canyon Super Premium All-Natural Recipes are slowly OVEN-BAKED under carefully controlled conditions and proper temperatures. This unique baking process changes the hard-to-digest molecules of "raw" starches into easy-to-digest dextrins. This process acts as a "pre-digest" of the kibble food, resulting in less strain on the pet's digestive system, and produces a greater degree of food absorption. A pet's intestinal tract is short; it functions in the most efficient manner when the food is concentrated and can be quickly digested. The important vitamins, minerals, and food ingredients are then easily assimilated into the pet's digestive system.

OVEN-BAKING PROCESS: In our oven-baking process, grains are freshly ground just before blending and forming into kibbles. Kibbles are baked as they move slowly through multiple ovens, producing a highly digestible and vitamin-rich food for your pets.

EXTRUSION vs. QUALITY OVEN-BAKING: Most companies cook their food using a steam extrusion process: the food mix is steamed as quickly as possible, usually less than 3 minutes, then squeezed through a metal die under extreme pressure. This process expands the food with air creating a uniform shape. This method does not produce the highly digestible food that your pet's system requires. Extrusion typically destroys natural vitamins, which then necessitates spraying on synthetic vitamins after the extrusion is completed.

Extrusion is faster and cheaper than old-fashioned baking, and is more efficient for mass production of a very consistent product; however, it affects starches, nutrients, proteins, and vitamins in ways that baking doesn't, making the food more difficult to digest, and even changing the structure of proteins, which may trigger allergic symptoms. Many pets that experience allergy symptoms on extruded foods thrive on oven-baked food.

BAKING TEMPERATURES: Any cook can mix ingredients—the secret is in the total cooking process. This is one of the reasons our food is not easily duplicated. Using multiple ovens, we slowly cook the food until it reaches required temperatures to make the food safe — no more.

COLOR OF THE FOOD: An oven-baked food will have various shades of colors, from the soft light inside to the heavy brown crunchy outside crust. Oven-baked food is food in its natural state. Like all natural things in our environment, and also because of the baking process, the color of the food will vary from time to time.

TEXTURE/CRISPNESS OF THE FOOD: Our oven-baked food has various shades of colors, from the soft light inside to the lightly browned crunchy outside crust. The texture and hardness is similar to that of a freshly-baked, crunchy cookie. Oven-baked food is food in its natural state. Like all natural things in our environment, and also because of the baking process, the color of the food will vary from time to time.

COMPARE USING THE "BLOAT" TEST: In one bowl place 1/4 cup Pinto Canyon oven-baked pet food. In a second bowl place an equal amount of any other pet food. Add warm water to cover and shake. Keep the food covered by adding water as needed. At the end of the day you will find that the Pinto Canyon food has broken down and has not expanded. Depending on the brand of the second food, it may have expanded in bulk 2 to 3 times the original size. Many professionals believe food that expansion may cause a serious bloat problem in your pet's stomach.
